Amerindian and Wildlife Adventure

On this eight-day set departure program, you’ll visit many of Guyana’s best wildlife viewing regions. Along the way, you’ll learn about Amerindian culture from native guides. Scheduled departure dates for 2006 are as follows: April 30th – May 8th; September 24th – October 2nd; and November 19th – 27th.

Sunday: Arrive in Guyana and transfer to Georgetown. Overnight at Cara Lodge.

Monday: Just after 9AM you will transfer to Ogle Airstrip for a flight over rainforest and savannah to Annai. Lunch will be served at Rock View Lodge. Afterward, transfer by 4x4 to the Amerindian village of Surama. On arrival in Surama, receive a welcome from a village counselor and settle into your accommodation. A local guide will escort you for a short walk on trails to observe the forest and bird life. As the afternoon cools your guide will take you on a tour of the village. Visit the local school, medical centre and church along with some of the village houses. Tonight enjoy an educational walk to observe wildlife and experience the mystique of the forest after dark. Overnight at Surama Guest House. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Tuesday: After breakfast take a full day hike of ten miles to see a stand of Green Heart trees, then further into the forest to a bush pond to observe Herons. Continue hiking and climb a small mountain to search for Guyana Cock-of-the-rock. Return to the village and overnight at the Surama Guest House.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Wednesday: Rise before dawn for a walk across the savannah and then the gentle climb up Surama Mountain in the cool morning air. This is the best time to observe bird life along the trail. Breakfast will be served at a look out point which affords incredible views across the village and savannah to the Pakaraima Mountains. Return to village for lunch and then in the cool of late afternoon take a three-mile walk across the savannah and through the rainforest to the Burro Burro River. Tonight overnight in a hammock at Carahaa Landing Camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Thursday: At dawn your guides will guide you down the Burro Burro River for opportunities to observe Giant River Otters, Tapir, Tira, Spider Monkeys and many more species. Return to village for lunch before departing Surama by 4x4 across the savannah and into the Iwokrama Forest to the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. Here we can bird watch from the vantage of 35 meters up in the canopy. After dinner we return to the walkway to experience the canopy at night. Overnight in Iwokrama Atta Rainforest Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Friday: This morning you can welcome the dawn chorus from the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. After breakfast, transfer by 4x4 along the trail to seek the elusive Jaguar. The Iwokrama forest is rapidly gaining an international reputation for its healthy jaguar populations that seem not to be troubled by the appearance of curious humans. No promises, but many have been lucky!  After lunch, you will leave the field station for the journey to Turtle Mountain, and a gentle climb up the mountain to its summit at 935ft (approx. 360m). It takes 1 ¾ hours to walk up the mountain, but the effort is more than worth it for the breathtaking views over the forest canopy when you get there. The rest of the afternoon will be spent exploring the area near to the Turtle Mountain Satellite Camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Saturday: After breakfast, you will travel back to the Field Station along the Essequibo River, with the chance to see assorted wildlife. Spend the rest of the morning on a wildlife walk near the field station with an Iwokrama Guide. The afternoon is free for you to relax, and then after dinner, take a boat ride to spot caiman and other nocturnal wildlife in the river after dark. Overnight at Iwokrama Field Station. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Sunday: Early morning boat trip followed by breakfast. After breakfast take a 4 x 4 back to Annai and overnight at Rock View Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Monday: After lunch, depart on your scheduled flight to Georgetown. Enjoy a Georgetown city tour before transferring to the airport for your departing flight. Breakfast and lunch included.
